Cannabidiol is one of the lesser-known cannabinoids found within the cannabis sativa plant. Less famous than its sibling, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD exists in a nebulous stage thanks to regulations loosening under the Farm Bill which was passed into federal law just this past year.
Cannabidiol is also known as CBD and it is a chemical compound found within the cannabis sativa plant. Ever since the 2018 Farm Bill put more cannabis and cannabidiol into the world, consumers everywhere have been able to find new solutions to their old problems. CBD interfaces directly with the neuroreceptors within our endocannabinoid systems to send signals to our brains that impact our mood, immune system, and even physical health.
While CBD is still in its infancy as an industry at large, there are people everywhere enjoying the beneficial outcomes that CBD can provide when enjoyed as part of a healthy regimen.
Let’s take a closer look at CBD to better understand what it is, how it works, and why CBD is beneficial.
Cannabidiol can be traced back to Asia, where it was used around 750 B.C. in rituals or for medicine. The longevity of the plant as well as its global representation is a true identifier of its efficacy, at least on a folk level.
While medical studies are ongoing into the efficacy of cannabidiol, it is presently being advertised as an effective way to find relief from symptoms of depression, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder. Some CBD products even claim to help customers sleep while enjoying a more mild recreational buzz.
According to James MacKillop, McMaster University’s co-director for Medicinal Cannabis Research, “It’s promising in a lot of different therapeutic avenues because it’s relatively safe.”
At the time of this writing, cannabidiol is said to provide many therapeutic benefits. Let’s explore a few of the most prominent benefits that CBD is said to provide.
One of the most advertised purported benefits of the consumption of CBD is its impact on anxiety. CBD is purported to provide anxiety relief in individuals who receive it both orally and as a smokable. A study performed by the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry revealed that test groups with more than 300mg of CBD experienced significant anxiety relief when compared to their control-tested peers.
Other studies have shown that cannabidiol can offer anti-anxiety benefits at the same level as the antidepressant imipramine. Whether this is a placebo or the result of effective dosing, more trial studies will need to be performed.
Individuals chronically finding themselves incapable of sleeping or struggling with depression will find that CBD beneficially affects some of their signs and symptoms. A study performed by the Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy came to reveal that CBD acted faster than some conventional antidepressants. A project performed at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil would also showcase the efficacy of CBD in the treatment of anxiety in mice and rats.
Symptoms of PTSD can make life hard to tolerate. Finding relief through CBD from PTSD symptoms is possible, at least according to a 2018 study performed by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. In the study, 11 patients were treated with CBD for their PTSD symptoms. The study lasted for eight weeks with 10 of 11 subjects showcasing a decrease in PTSD symptoms.
Throughout the study, the researchers came to realize that CBD was well tolerated and effective. These same studies advocated for the combination of CBD and THC to benefit from the entourage effect, whereupon THC and CBD work together to maximize each other’s benefits and potency.
Unmanageable pain and chronic stress can both be addressed through the use of CBD, at least according to the Canadian government after it approved the use of Sativex. Sativex is a THC/CBD nasal spray that was approved for the treatment of MS-related neuropathic pain. The drug was again approved for the treatment of cancer pain in 2007. Studies showed that CBD was effective in reducing sharp pain, itchy sensations, and even intense bouts of pain as they manifested.
CBD continues to act as a major component in the treatment of chronic pain. CBD can be applied topically or ingested orally. When utilized as a topical, CBD doesn’t impact systemic issues and instead focuses on more localized pain.
A common condition in young and old individuals, arthritis involves and focuses on the deterioration of tissues surrounding your joints. While there are several different forms of arthritis, the vast majority of treatments are targeted at symptoms of pain, loss of motion, and stiffness.
Referencing the Sativex drug from above, arthritis has been found treatable through a mixture of CBD and THC. A 2018 study revealed that the localized use of CBD gel in doses exceeding 250mg was effective in the treatment of knee pain. Patients were able to step away from other anti-inflammatory drugs as well as painkillers.
Always reference a medical professional when undertaking new treatments. At the time of this writing, pure CBD is safe with few, if any, reported side effects. With that being said, studies are ongoing with new reports, outcomes, and updates released by the day.
Yasmin Hurd at the Addiction Institute of Mount Sinai in New York Study stated, “It has a potential medicinal value.”
